How Long Does Duct Cleaning Take Hours, Not Minutes

Plan on a good part of the day: published estimates for a typical single-system house run from about two to five hours, and a thorough job on a larger or older Wheaton house can stretch to six to eight hours or more.

The numbers that are published

NADCA, the duct cleaning trade association, does not publish a fixed time. It says the hours depend on the size of the home, the number of systems, how contaminated they are and how many technicians are on the job, and it suggests asking for a time estimate for your own system. Industry sources that do give a number land in two camps. HVAC.com puts an average cleaning at roughly two to five hours, with a small apartment taking a couple of hours and a multi-story house most of the day. An HVAC School podcast with a duct cleaning contractor put a typical residential job at six to eight hours, done properly with two people. The gap between those figures is mostly the difference between a quick pass and a whole-system cleaning.

Why a fast job should raise a question

A crew that is in and out in an hour has almost certainly not cleaned the whole system. NADCA's list of what belongs in a cleaning starts with the blower motor and its housing, the heat exchanger, the cooling coil and its drain pan, then moves out through the plenum, every duct, and each register and grille. Setting up the vacuum, opening access points, working every supply and return run, pulling the blower, and then closing up and testing all takes time. Speed is not proof of skill here; it is usually proof of a smaller scope.

What adds hours in a Wheaton house

Age and layout. Census figures put the median Wheaton home at 1976, with about 62 percent of houses built before 1980. A system that has run through around fifty heating seasons often has extra branches, abandoned runs, panned returns between floor joists and several generations of patched joints. Each of those takes longer to reach and clean than a short modern run.

Finished basements. When the main trunk sits above a drywall ceiling, access is limited to registers and any service openings, and technicians may need to cut and later seal access holes. That slows every step.

The furnace blower. Wheaton's nearest official weather station logs close to six thousand heating degree days in a normal year, so the blower runs much of the year and its wheel is often caked with dust. Removing and cleaning it can add a meaningful block of time on its own, which is why furnace blower cleaning is often listed separately.

A second system. Larger houses with two furnaces are, in effect, two jobs on one visit.

Remodel dust. After a basement or kitchen project, drywall dust packs into the return side and the blower and takes longer to remove than ordinary household dust. Post-renovation duct cleaning usually takes longer than a routine visit for that reason.

What the day looks like at home

Expect the heating and cooling to be off while the crew works, since the system is opened and connected to the vacuum. Clear access to the furnace, every register and any return grilles before the crew arrives; moving furniture eats into the time. Ask how they will protect floors and furnishings, which the EPA says a provider should do. If someone has to be home the whole time, plan for the longer estimate rather than the shorter one.

Booking around Wheaton weather

Because the system is off during the work, a cold January morning is a poor time for an all-day cleaning. Spring and early fall are easier: the house stays comfortable with the furnace down, and cleaning before the heating season means the blower starts winter clean. If the cleaning is after a remodel, book it after the sanding is finished so the work is not undone.

Getting a real estimate

Ask anyone quoting the job how long they expect to be there and what that time covers: supplies only or returns too, the main trunks, the blower, the coil. A time estimate is a good check on scope, and a quote that covers the full system is easier to compare against the sourced ranges on the pricing page.
